For men, a collared shirt with smart trousers is appropriate. A jacket is encouraged but optional, so you don’t need to pack a suit for every evening.

Jeans, shorts and casual sportswear are not considered suitable in the venues where the evening dress code applies.
Gala Evenings are when Cunard’s heritage really comes to the fore. These are special evenings when guests are invited to dress more formally, and many of the ship’s restaurants, bars and entertainment spaces take on an added sense of occasion.
For men, the traditional choice is a tuxedo or dinner jacket, although a dark suit worn with a tie or bow tie is also appropriate. Women might choose a floor-length gown, cocktail dress or smart trouser suit.
Does that mean you need to buy a tuxedo before your first Cunard cruise? No. A dark suit meets Cunard’s guidance, and the emphasis is increasingly on guests wearing something they feel comfortable and confident in.
Gala Evenings often have themes, too. Black and White is perhaps the best known, while other themes include Red and Gold, Roaring 20s and Masquerade. Participation can be as subtle or elaborate as you like. A bow tie, pocket square, jewellery or other accessory can be enough to acknowledge the theme without buying an entirely new outfit.

No. If formal dress isn’t for you, Cunard offers alternative dining and lounge options where the evening dress code doesn’t apply.
However, if you choose to spend the evening in the main restaurants, most bars or entertainment venues, you should follow the stated dress code. The easiest way to think about it is that dressing up is not compulsory everywhere, but it is an established part of the experience in many of the ship’s principal venues.
This gives you a choice. You can embrace a Gala Evening completely, enjoy Smart Attire on other nights or opt for one of the more relaxed areas when you would rather keep things casual.
